Driving Magazine Issue 4 by Juanetta Edwards and Jackie Willis (Instructor and screener in Norfolk)
Part of what I do as “The Road Ahead” is offer a drive around for the clients who come here.
They have the choice of diagnosticians and I always inform them of that.
Having said that, if they come here they are offered a mini tour around the neighbourhood in “Destiny” The Road Ahead car to test how the perception looks and feels whilst slipping the lens on and off. The diagnostician kindly allows her lenses to have a journey as this is very important if the client is going to be driving.
Like me, often, this is the ACTUAL issue that spurs the Irlen testing. Itin control of a vehicle.
When touring around with the client I talk about the traffic lights, road markings, distance between the cars. Often this is greeted with horror/amazement when the realisation sets in. A recent "test drive" showed the client just how much distortion she actually had.She was particularly shocked by the effect the traffic light had on her.
Traffic lights are no longer one bulb with a plastic covering. These days they are many LED bulbs which for some people can have a catastrophic effect. For others it can cause disorientation and lack of concentration.
I have had clients report that the white lines disappear. So how does the stopping at the line work when out on your own?
Awareness is growing with driving instructors more widely now!
