My Dilemma.. Mental Health or Irlen Syndrome?

It is national mental health week.

Around 450 million people currently suffer from such conditions, placing mental disorders among the leading causes of ill-health and disability worldwide.

15-18% of the population have Irlen syndrome which is also a brain based condition.

This is a brain scan showing the improvements that occurred to an Irlen sufferer when wearing Irlen filters. . Look how the brain calmed.

Many of the symptoms of mental health share symptoms and often occur together with Irlen syndrome. What IF the shared symptoms have led to misdiagnosis in some cases?

Maybe agoraphobia, claustrophobia, anxiety, some depression could be as a result of Irlen syndrome. Diagnosis and treatment could enable that person to live a normal life.

I have heard many times “oh I thought I was going mad”. I have seen clients cry because they realise that their horrific symptoms are Irlen syndrome and can be “fixed”.

This is why I think that some mental health diagnosis could be Irlen,

Picture the scenario’s.

A confined space with bright lighting and patterns.

Entering a lift with severe Irlen syndrome. It could be that the grid with the stripes move and shining exceeedingly brightly. The interior is brightly lit and very often patterned with a shiny floor.

Supermarket signs moving all over the place with flashing and distortion. Faces may be distorting or not recognisable as a whole face. Lighting could be blinding and disorientating. The floor is often shiny. Aisles could be twisting or closing in. Is the reaction to all this necessarily a mental illness?

DO YOU SEE MY DILEMMA?

I urge anyone to take the Irlen self- test. It takes a few minutes, costs nothing, and could be the start of the changing of your life. www.irlen.com

As an Irlen sufferer you could be living with constant movement, disorientation, blinding light, unbearable sensory overload, without added severe headache and migraine.

(of course not all people with Irlen syndrome experience symptoms to such a severity level).

Imagine maybe what shape your mental health would be in?
